Week 11 Journal Entry

This past week I have learned a lot about money and whether or not it is "evil". In my opinion, money itself is not evil. I mean, how could money be evil? It can't even act for itself. Yes, money can be used for evil. But, it can also be used for good. I feel like when people obsess over it, then that is evil and becomes one of the deadly sins in greed. We also learned in class about income statements and how to create them for ourselves based on spending and total revenue. It was interesting to learn how to categorize each of the different things they take into account for an income statement as well. Not the most fun part of business, but still necessary.

Week 9 Journal Entry

Entitled: " feeling  that you have the  right  to do or have what you  want  without having to  work  for it or  deserve  it, just because of who you are"(Cambridge Dictionary) I think our Father in Heaven entitles His children to a married couple who honor those marital vows because it is only fair to the child. They deserve the best possible environment; one that heeds the gospel of Jesus Christ or has similar standards.  The proclamation states that happiness is "most likely", because it really isn't a guarantee. No matter how great the situation may be or seem, people still have their agency to be happy or not. Even in the best of scenario's families could still crumble. It's up to the members of the family to choose happiness. I believe that communication is an implied part of a successful marriage. Especially if the marriage has faith, prayer, love and compassion. Communication plays a vital role in each of those. These are a...

Week 8 Journal Entry

This week I learned some good approaches and some bad approaches when selling any item. As we stood out in the windy and cold weather, we were able to see some good success with the amount of sales we had. We were optimistic of our plan, even though it was our third option for this assignment. We made The Family Crisis Centre the main focus of our sales pitch and it was probably our most successful tactic. I really enjoyed the presentation in this week's class. I love the emphasis that the presenting group put on falling forward. Being able to recover and to learn from our mistakes is a huge part of our success whether we realize it or not. We need to learn from our mistakes and ultimately improve. It's a key part of our lives here on earth. It is exactly what our Father in Heaven wants us to do. I really want to implement this mindset in my everyday life and always strive to get up, dust off, and keep moving forward when I do inevitably fail.

Week 7 Journal Entry

In class this week, we had a guest speaker who just blew my socks off with wisdom! Turns out that he is the father in law of Brother Wasden! But I learned a lot! He taught us about his financial formula that he has lived by for most of his life and how it has worked out so well for him and his family. He also counseled us to model ourselves after somebody that is already successful. I took that counsel to heart and am going to be modeling myself after my father, who has always been a phenomenal example of work ethic and intelligence. He also mentioned his top 3 priorities in his life which were 1) God 2) His wife and 3) the legacy he leaves with his children. Just a great experience getting to listen to his story! I want to apply many of those things in my own life so that I can be successful as he is!

Week 5 Journal Entry

In this weeks readings I learned a lot about skill, luck, and hard work when trying to be successful. Each of these play different roles in business and especially entrepreneurship. Some play a bigger role than others, but they all still amount to the final product of an entrepreneur and his company. Hard work definitely trumps the other two, followed by skill, and then luck. You could be the most skilled entrepreneur or businessman out there, but somebody that works harder than you could easily pass you up and become more successful. We watched a video in class about a man that sought to be successful, so he found a man to mentor him and teach him how to do just that. They both met up at the beach and the man made him walk out waist deep into the ocean. Once they reached that point, the man dunked him under the water and held him under until he was on the brink of passing out. Once he came out of the water grasping for air, the man asked him how he felt when he was underwater. He said...

Week 4 Journal Entry

This week I have learned a lot about identifying my fears, and also how to overcome them and achieve the goals that I have. The team that presented this week, posed the question "what will hold you back from attaining your dreams?". As I have pondered that, I have come to the conclusion that one thing that holds me back from time to time is my lack of focus. I am very creative, and at times that serves as a weakness for me because it distracts me from certain mundane tasks like homework and such. I have decided that I am going to hold myself accountable to a set schedule so that I know what I have to do and when to do it. I feel like this will help me later on down the road of life as well. I feel like another positive factor in helping me overcome this roadblock, will be the Savior and His Atonement. As I rely on Him in faith, I know that I can overcome my weaknesses and make them strengths. Another thing that I have been pondering this week has been persistence and determ...

Week 3 Journal Entry

This week I have learned a lot about personal integrity in the business world. The group presentation this past Monday showed the class a video about a man that was asked by his potential employer to lie about a business order. His initial reaction was one of shock, realizing that what he was being asked to do was wrong. The man in charge that asked him to make the false order saw that he was struggling with the idea, and offered for him to think about it that evening and to report the next day if he was on board. The man who was seeking to be hired went home that night to talk it over with his wife. He and she both knew that they needed this job, but ultimately the man decided to choose his integrity over the job that put that at risk. He returned to the office the next morning and told the employer that he knew it was wrong of him and that he wouldn't follow through with it. The employer stood up and shook his hand, congratulating him on his decision to be honest. He went on to e...
